IBM Cognos OLAP: TM1 versus PowerCubes

By Miro Kosecek, November 6, 2010 8:20 pm

You can find some difference in ways users interact with the data. In Cognos 8 BI you can access data from both PowerCube and TM1 sources with all the Analysis, the Report and the Query Studios. Both OLAPs has their own tools for accessing data from within Excel spreadsheets. TM1 has its own web reporting server that is pretty nice and the fat client Executive Viewer (Advisor in Express version) is quite good for analysis. TM1 excels also in creating both static and especially dynamic subsets which are really cool.

Nevertheless the PowerPlay client and the PowerPlay Studio that can be used for accessing data in PowerCubes only provide simply superb user experience that TM1 cannot surpass yet. When an organization will want to migrate OLAP to TM1 it will be probably PowerPlay users that will become the biggest obstacle to overcome.

The two OLAPs surely will coexist for next ten years and probably more, but it looks that TM1 will eventually win over PowerCubes. The time will show.
